Tips to Prevent Property Crime
Bike thefts, car break-ins, and burglaries are unsettling and can result in significant financial costs. Everyone can take steps to prevent property crime in our community. Consider these tips to help prevent property crime in Burlington:
Bikes
- Always lock your bike to a bike rack, even if you are leaving it for just a moment
- Lock your bike’s frame and wheels
- Lock your bike even when keeping it in a garage, porch, or patio
- Use a strong bike lock, like a U-lock
- Register your bike’s serial number with the Burlington Police Department. If your bike is stolen, this could help the Police Department return your bike to you.
Homes
- Always lock outside doors and windows, even when you are home or if you leave the house briefly
- Never hide spare keys outside, under doormats, or in flower pots
- Keep garage doors locked and closed
Cars
- Never leave your car running unattended
- Do not leave your keys in your car
- Always remove valuables, like wallets and electronics, from parked cars
